Apart from the one conducted in Australia and New Zealand, the researchers at Qingdao University Medical College in China examined the relationship between depression and the consumption of coffee and caffeine.

Based on what they researched, “the risk of depression decreased faster, and the association became significant when the caffeine consumption was above 68 mg/day and below 509 mg/day.”

The question is, can coffee help reduce depression? Let us put it this way. The lost of ability to enjoy, and lack of motivation are two of the typical characteristics of depression. As what was mentioned, the caffeine can supply enough energy and is a psychostimulant that increases motivation. If these two reasons are accepted, this might explain the coffee’s long-term effect on the depressive disorder.

Research entitled Association of Coffee Drinking with Total and Cause-Specific Mortality that was conducted to 400,000 50 to 71-year old Americans found that 10 to 15 percent are less likely to die in the next 13 years if they drink two to three cups per day. The study was from National Cancer Institute and was led by Neal Freedman.
